Two reasons for this:
1. We love tequila
2. Fresh fruit
Scratching you head? Fresh fruit not only makes for the best flavored margaritas but also cuts the calories and makes the carb counters happy.
At this point please do not mention “Skinny Girl.” We have higher standards. We stick to the Reposado, Añejo or at least Gold Tequila if we must at a lesser bar. As a matter of fact, the aged tequila requires less flavorings to augment the drink. And yes, anything you add should improve the natural flavor of the spirit not mute it beyond recognition.
Fresh fruits that pair well with tequila include oranges, pineapple, mango, grapefruit, strawberry, lime, lemon and papaya. We’ve had good luck adding tequila to iced teas that are ginger based. Coconut is good too if you’re blending with ice. Cooked fruits, like cranberry and rhubarb, are also exceptional but will need added sweetener. In these cases blue agave is a good, low-glycemic, alternative to sugar, and mixes better in drinks.
If you’re not going to blend with ice, a splash of tonic can really add some attitude too.
