A Virgin Cosmopolitan for Those Who Want It Year-Round

Everyone only drinks virgin cosmopolitans during the holidays nowadays, but it’s such a classic. Why not have it year-round? I know so many people out there have a love for this drink that stretches beyond seasonality. And this recipe is for them!

I’m going to show you my favorite virgin cosmopolitan recipe of all time––beautifully sweet and sour with that signature cranberry flavor. I’ll also give you the most useful tip on garnish and presentation. With a mocktail as simple as the virgin cosmopolitan, you’re not given much leeway with the appearance in order to wow, so listen carefully!

How Do You Get That Cosmopolitan Flavor?

Along with nonalcoholic ingredients like cranberry and lime juice, the typical alcoholic cosmopolitan has orange liquor and citrus vodka. Luckily for us, these spirits are easy to substitute in a virgin format. Vodka barely has a flavor, so just adding some citrus will be fine. And even then, we’re already adding lime, so you really don’t need to do anything. Orange liquor is nearly as simple––just adding some orange juice will be perfect.

Now, for any party or gathering that may work. But if the drinks are central to your get-together, you may want to take things further. You have a few options to replicate deeper flavors that may not fully translate with just the nonalcoholic ingredients above. If you like the bitterness and slight heat of alcohol, try adding powdered capsaicin and orange bitters. Capsaicin will add warmth, and orange bitters will reinforce the orange flavors and bring a bit of bitterness to the mocktail. Just make sure to go really light on the capsaicin––it’s strong.

Keep Your Virgin Cosmopolitan’s Garnish Simple

Beautiful pink color on the virgin cosmopolitan

The integral idea of a cosmopolitan is that it has to be sophisticated. Hell, cosmopolitan as an adjective is a synonym for sophisticated. So then, what makes it that way? Well, that’s the most challenging part about a virgin cosmopolitan. It has to be simple in a certain way.

One, and only one garnish can be used for a virgin cosmopolitan. Anything more, and it becomes too complex and loses all of its class. What makes a cosmopolitan look so formal, fancy and sophisticated is this central theme––high contrast and a simplistic design. I like to compare it to scan design couches. If you’ve ever been into one of their stores, you’ll know that every piece of furniture follows that theme.

If you think orange peels or peels, in general, are overused, look for something new. Just make sure it contrasts with the body of the cocktail. In the case of the cosmopolitan above, you’re contrasting pink with orange. In another instance, you could be contrasting that pink with a green or darker color. And heck, that might work even better because you’re getting more contrast. Regardless, just follow those two rules––high contrast and simplistic design.

Virgin Cosmopolitans Need a Beautiful Color

The cosmopolitan has such a pleasant body

You can only get that high contrast if your virgin cosmopolitan’s body is the right color, so pay attention to it. This recipe tries to achieve a light pink hue, but you can never be sure with variations in the ingredients everyone uses. It looks good and indicates you’re using good liquid proportions. If you see it getting too red, adjust.

If you need a guide to what it should look like, think redneck skin. Or pig skin if you’ve never been to farmin’ country. Funny how those two are comparable. Must be due to all those pig calling competitions. I’m from Florida, so I just spectate those things.

When all that’s left is to put a lemon peel on the rim, you’ll be wanting to make sure the body can stand out. Otherwise, you’ve just got a janky cosmopolitan mocktail with a lemon peel garnish. It’s like putting a cherry on top of a rocky road sunday, but it’s warm and not rocky road ice cream.

Before you see the recipe, I want to quickly get that image out of your head by letting you know that this recipe comes from Mount Nelson in Cape Town, South Africa. It’s the city’s premier urban hotel. You can barely tell you’re in a city with all the well-kept garden plants around.

I snapped the photos you see above during a meeting with their general manager. All I can say is they know what they’re doing with their drinks. You can check out their website here if you want to go yourself.

But for now, make yourself a delicious virgin cosmopolitan with the incredible recipe below and the tips above to keep you on the right track!
