Nussknacker Glühwein

 

This recipe is for the German Glühwein, which literally translates to glow-wine, because of how you feel after you drink it after coming in from the cold.

 

Ingredients

 2 Orange Slices
 10 Whole Cloves
 1 ½ cups Fresh Orange Juice
 ½ cup Coconut Sugar
 5 Cinnamon Sticks
 1 Star Anise
 1 Vanilla Bean (sliced in half)
 2 bottles Red Wine (Pinot Noir or Grenache work well)
 ½ cup Brandy
 ½ cup Amaretto

 

Directions

Stick whole cloves into orange slices and place in a large stockpot

Add the orange juice, sugar, cinnamon sticks, star anise, vanilla bean and bring to a boil

Reduce to low and simmer for 30 minutes

Add one cup of wine and let simmer for another 30 minutes, until it turns into a thick syrupy mixture

Add the rest of the wine, brandy, and Amaretto to the mixture

6

Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 5 minutes

Strain the orange slices, cloves, cinnamon sticks, anise, vanilla bean out of the mixture and serve in a heatproof mug

Garnish with orange peel and star anise
